Song of the Day

Deer Hunter is an indie rock band from Atlanta that puts out a lot of crazy music and albums with crazy titles. They’ve been through the laundry machine and spit out a few times and what you end up with is something as odd and confusingly interesting as this song off their latest album Halcyon Digest which just came out. For some reason I have the sense that after years of meandering and half-hearted touring and production the build up of apathy and depression from lack of success came to such a pinnacle that they’ve begun producing music that is actually appealing to a larger audience. I’ve noticed them on several websites now and this song in particular has some kind of indie buzz going that I had to acknowledge them.

Somehow I feel like I’m being harsh on them, but when I read other articles on them like their bands short bio on
Last.fm for example it reads like a total amateur horror show and makes me feel like everything I’m writing is spot on. I was impressed by the other popular song on this album called Revival which you should click and listen to, especially if you don’t think these guys are any good, because that song sounds much more “normal” in the “I’ve heard this song structure before” kind of way and lets you stand on familiar ground long enough to say, “ok, yeah, these guys have potential”. Well I think they’ve got enough attention now-a-days from these two songs that in order to stop this pig from flying they’ve got to really not want to be successful. Just the look on the guys face in the music video is just oozing with success, much like the wide variety of facial expressions on the lead singer of Radiohead’s face does in so many of their music videos, and just look at the success they’ve had as a result.

It’s funny to wonder what a band must be thinking when they come up with the name of their band, or songs, or albums. Sometimes you wonder if it’s to make fun of the thing that is referenced in the name or make fun of it, or bring sarcastic stoic contemporary shame to it. Or maybe you think it will make it really hard for people to find your album on Amazon.com in a sea of hunting DVDs and recordings. Whatever the reason, I couldn’t find them on iTunes or Amazon’s product searches, which is why there’s no link to this album on here.
