Song of the Day: Small Black – Bad Lover
I wonder if the historical slate of band names was whipped clean would indie bands like this one out of Brooklyn still choose the names that they do? I guess every band has a different reason for picking their name aside from trying to sound cool, but it just makes me wonder. After watching this music video for some reason I feel like I’ve could toss my brain into one of those side loading laundry machines for a few cycles and I wouldn’t know anything strange happened. There’s something emotionally strong about this song but like most of the objects in the music video, all the sounds seem to be slowly destroyed like dragging something behind a car while it slowly grinds away.
The masks remind me of a bunch of other music videos. Is there some kind of psychological trend or message here that I’m missing here? Anyone, anyone, … …. Bueler, Bueler?
Song of the Day: Eleven Tigers – Stableface

New digitalism, Eleven Tigers blends elements from all electronic genres into a psychedelic kaleidescope that keeps on giving. Jokubas Dargis a Lithuanian now living in London is responsible for all this madness.

Song of the Day: Ratatat – Mirando
Ratatat is a Brooklyn based duo that produces some good tunes that are easily recognizable but diverse in their minimal synthesized melodies and progressions. Their music can replicate tonal landscapes that are reminiscent of bands like Radiohead, The Strokes, Crystal Castles but also vary into different musical themes that employ melodies riffs and sounds from all sorts of musical genres from hip-hop, to R&B, to New Wave and Rock. It’s hard to find any bad songs by this band. Here’s a bunch of other great songs with music videos on YouTube that I found by them that are really worth listening to. You have to hear them to get a taste for what this band can do. Be careful not to play them all at once.
The Go! Team – Apollo Throwdown
There’s a lot of bands whose sound I’m reminded of when I listen to The Go! Team, their style of power pop, candy chorus, 70′s lo-fi, action-theme song, and percussive cheer-leading vocals mixes so many different sounds that they’re familiar on their first listen. That’s why their songs are so easily likable, the catch is that they can take all that noise and use it well. I just learned about them the other day while listening through NPR’s Song of the Day list, and decided they needed a repeat showing here on the blog. Go Team Go!
Song of the Day : Baths – Maximalist
Baths kicks ass. There’s a lot to say here, I’m feeling less explicit today so I’m just going to say that I have huge respect for Baths or Will Wiesenfeld or [Post-Foetus]. As well, whoever makes the calls on his music videos also gets my kudos.
If you’re turned off by the sound I think perhaps your criteria for beauty in sound is too restrictive. If you love this stuff then please spread the word. I wish I could fill up this entire Song of the Day blog with tunes like this, but there is plenty of other good indie music that doesn’t fall into the electronic experimental glitch-hop lo-fi ambient genre.
I’m just going to go ahead and post both of Baths’ two other top songs (per Last.fm) because I like them both as well and figured I might as well save you a click or two. Here they are…
Lovely Bloodflow
… and Aminals
Song of the Day : Bat For Lashes – Daniel

Natasha Khan, the artist behind the band Bat for Lashes, was born and lives in England, she appeared on David Letterman in the US in 2009 playing this song and once toured as the opening band for Radiohead. I like her style and her music, the deep thickness of the sound she creates is involving and a little mysterious, just like her music videos. For her full bio check it out on Last.fm. I’m always open to new song suggestions for Song of the Day, please add a comment or email me directly. You can also tune in to Song of the Day on Twitter and Facebook with the links at the top of the page. This blog is all about sharing new indie music artists, music videos, and songs to help spread the word about great music and artists that most people haven’t heard of before. So if you know any feel free to send them over!
Song of the Day : Broken Social Scene – World Sick
Finally Broken Social Scene has come up with another full length album! It’s been so long since I savored the feeling of listening to new songs of theirs. My favorite track by Broken Social Scene comes from their album You Forgot it in People called “Almost Crimes“. That entire album is amazing actually. If you’ve never heard of Broken Social Scene you might be surprised to know that the singer Feist was a singer for Broken Social Scene before she launched her solo album that made it into the ipod commercials.
This song comes off Broken Social Scenes latest album Forgiveness Rock Record which was just released last year. I hope you give this well known yet lesser known experimental indie band a good listen.
I always appreciate new Song of the Day suggestions whether it be indie music or not. Independent artists are good because they usually are not very well known. But since the point of the blog is to help people discover new music, any artist, band or music group that you know of that is uncommon or rare, please send them my way or add a comment at the bottom of any post.
