postheadericon Alternative Music Reviews: Hotter Later – Photographs

Photographs by Hotter LAterEP Album Cover Image for Hotter Later - Photographs

This alternative indie band has been around since at least 2009, and has just released a new EP. You can hear all their tracks on their SoundCloud page. Hotter Later (or Hotter LAter) appears to be the brainchild of Sturgis Adams from Los Angeles, California. Their sound is a casual mix of synth, well harmonized vocals, and steady drum guitar rhythms. The tone reminds me of the honest humility of Guster but with bigger rocks falling from the sky.

I believe I came found Hotter LAter on Twitter and after listening to this track decided to share the love on Song of the Day here. Although there isn’t much information about these guys online yet. Last.fm and BandCamp would be my next recommendations for them.

postheadericon Song of the Day: Brooke Fraser – Something In The Water

Brooke Fraser - Something In The Water singer songwriter portrait of the artist

Brooke Fraser is already very popular and has hit #1 and #3 in music charts consistently in Australia and New Zealand. Now after signing with Sony she’s running around the world to share her new intimate soul sharing album Flags which was released in October 2010.

This song of hers continues to rise up from small beginnings into something great and powerful. It inspires, instills wonder in our minds, and stirs passion in our hearts. A love song asking, what makes me love you like I do? It must be something in the water she says, pointing to that deep mysterious and unexplainable feeling we have when we become deeply moved and impassioned by someone who has taken our heart. I can keep listening to this song again and again, and the music video artfully jumping from one life-style to another paints stories that we can relate to of love found and beauty that it brings.

Read a huge bio on Brooke on Last.fm and check out the Brooke Fraser official website for more music, pics, and tour dates.

postheadericon Song of the Day: Freelance Whales – Enzymes

alternative music group Freelance Whales photo

This is what I’m talking about! Rich, deep, subtle but strong, creates memories as it moves through you, and makes you shutter as it leaps. And if that’s just how I feel about my coffee in the mornings, imagine how I feel about this song! Kudos to Freelance Whales for their excellent new single and for all their hard work playing in subways, or at least posing for photos with all their stuff in subways. Also, much love for any band that openly gives away some of their best songs for free, like Freelance Whales are!

So I encourage you to go take advantage and go to their page at Green Label Sound. I believe they’re giving away this track and another one for free! BONKERS!!!! What more can I say? They’re from Queens, New York… you can sample more of their stuff on their Last.fm page…. I’d love to see them live. Yep, that’s it for now.

postheadericon Song of the Day: Alexander – A Million Years

Song of the Day band image Alexander - A Million Years

Alexander Ebert, lead singer of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, released his solo artist work under the band name “Alexander”. His first single was title “Truth“. The music video for this track “A Million Years” is a creative blend of imaginative settings in which the timeless monuments of our world narrate the song of love found. And although it may feel like the sadness we’ve seen has existed for millions of years, the strength and beauty of love can blow it all away. The words of the song tell us how valuable and precious love is and the power it has to make all of existence and all its sadness worth enduring just for this one love.

FREE DOWNLOAD OF BRAINS BY OH NO! OH MY!

The band Oh No Oh My has produced friendly rock tracks that speak humbly and directly to our subconscious mind. Their songs are a narrative of humble yet hopeful thoughts about how we navigate through life in our own way. Their songs claim their own space and time and don’t even notice that they are unique or brilliant or simple. They are what they are, and don’t mind if you don’t like their music. By their tone they seem perfectly content to go about their lives and enjoy music for what it is. Be sure to listen to more of their songs using the link below.

postheadericon Song of the Day: I’m Not A Pilot – Operation

band image for I'm Not A Pilot - Operation

Starting with their EP in June of 2009 the classical ambient pop sounds of I’m Not A Pilot made their full length debut last November with “Need Money For Rocket Fuel” making waves on the Milwaukee music scene. With half the band working full-time throughout recording process the group has been building a grassroots following with the loyal support of friends and family along with their growing local fan base. Touring locally they earned the title of “Band Of The Year” by Radio Milwaukee and I believe has a bright future ahead of them.

Sample all of their latest tracks on the I’m Not A Pilot official website and get a free song download when you “Like” their Facebook page.

Also, check out the music video for their song No Heart off their EP.

postheadericon Song of the Day: Hurt Me – The Jezabels

Hurt Me - The Jezabels indie music video review

The Jezabels rolled out of Sydney Australia in 2007. Here’s a little sample of what they have to offer. This song builds up and keeps racing like your heart at the moment of your life when your life’s passion meets the opportunity of a life-time. It keeps building and never lets you down. Their indie rock explodes with an indie pop sound that pushes the otherwise calm genre into a fit of passionate rage and excitement, and I like it!

postheadericon Song of the Day: Beautiful Release – The Vitrolum Republic

gypsy noir folk acoustic music from Milwaukee Wisconsin

Crashing into the folk music scene out of Milwaukee Winsconsin The Vitrolum Republic instantly comes across with the depth and tone of a group well worn with the experience of decades of music making. Perhaps the two and half years they took to produce the album allowed them to polish their sound, but even then the tracks stand on their own as timeless additions to folk music tradition.

For Highbrow Sideshows and Rowboat Serenades is their first full length album and well worth the wait (in case you already knew about them and were waiting). You can listen to the entire album and learn more about the band at the Vitrolum Republic official website.
