Sia – Clap Your Hands

The best concert I’ve ever been to was Sia in San Diego. Her voice is incredible and despite her rise from unknown artist to mega popular singer pop star the only artistic affect that the fame and probably corporate influence on the production of her music has been that her songs now sound happier, more cheerful and playful. By the titles of her first albums and the lyrics and tone of her earlier songs it sounds like she’d been depressed or struggling with some inner conflicts, demons, or trauma. But by the sound of her music now it appears that she is happier, and at least now hopefully free to make all the music she pleases.
For all of 2005 I was obsessed with hearing her voice in the song Somersault on Zero 7′s album When it Falls. It wasn’t just my Song of the Day it was my Song of the Year back then. After working with Zero 7 Sia began focusing on her solo career and with great success.
Her album Colour the Small One was amazing, and her song Breathe Me and it’s beautiful and original music video is probably responsible for much of her introduction to American audiences. In particular, her song Don’t Bring Me Down is perhaps one of my top ten favorite songs ever. I think the strings in the background combined with the beauty of the song and her voice are magnificent.
If you haven’t heard of Sia before, please give her a fair listen and you may also want to check out the band Zero 7 and the singer songwriter Jose Gonzalez.
