Song of the Day: Alexander – A Million Years
Alexander Ebert, lead singer of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, released his solo artist work under the band name “Alexander”. His first single was title “Truth“. The music video for this track “A Million Years” is a creative blend of imaginative settings in which the timeless monuments of our world narrate the song of love found. And although it may feel like the sadness we’ve seen has existed for millions of years, the strength and beauty of love can blow it all away. The words of the song tell us how valuable and precious love is and the power it has to make all of existence and all its sadness worth enduring just for this one love.
Song of the Day: The Dodos – Black Night
I’ve got a thing for indie bands, San Francisco, music that’s uplifting, songs that you can dance to, music videos that are original, anything funny, quick drum riffs, black & white videos, and songs with choruses with non-verbal vocal sounds. This music video for Black Night by The Dodos off their latest album No Color hits a lot of chords for me. All that’s missing is a plane ticket to San Fran and a big group of friends causing a raucous.
The Dodos have released 4 albums since their first in 2006, so there’s plenty of this stuff to go around.
Song of the Day: The Black Keys – Everlasting Light
Let me be your everlasting light. I know everyone’s heard of the Black Keys and maybe you wouldn’t put them in an indie category, but I don’t care, this is my music blog bitches! hahahahahaha
I actually didn’t really like their sound until I heard this song, now I like this song and they have my respect, what’s your favorite Black Keys song? Or don’t you got one?
Song of the Day: Small Black – Bad Lover
I wonder if the historical slate of band names was whipped clean would indie bands like this one out of Brooklyn still choose the names that they do? I guess every band has a different reason for picking their name aside from trying to sound cool, but it just makes me wonder. After watching this music video for some reason I feel like I’ve could toss my brain into one of those side loading laundry machines for a few cycles and I wouldn’t know anything strange happened. There’s something emotionally strong about this song but like most of the objects in the music video, all the sounds seem to be slowly destroyed like dragging something behind a car while it slowly grinds away.
The masks remind me of a bunch of other music videos. Is there some kind of psychological trend or message here that I’m missing here? Anyone, anyone, … …. Bueler, Bueler?
Song of the Day: Filthy Dukes – This Rhythm
“Get your Filthy Dukes off me!”, she cried before screaming and dashing out of the dark pulsing London nightclub. Funny scene huh, happens ALL THE TIME!
What’s with all the electronic music on the Song of the Day blog? This doesn’t sound like indie music, it’s like I’m in a Nintendo game from the 80′s or something? Which makes me wonder, did they have Nintendo in England in 1985 too? The guys from Filthy Dukes probably did, damn dirty remixers.
Song of the Day: Ratatat – Mirando
Ratatat is a Brooklyn based duo that produces some good tunes that are easily recognizable but diverse in their minimal synthesized melodies and progressions. Their music can replicate tonal landscapes that are reminiscent of bands like Radiohead, The Strokes, Crystal Castles but also vary into different musical themes that employ melodies riffs and sounds from all sorts of musical genres from hip-hop, to R&B, to New Wave and Rock. It’s hard to find any bad songs by this band. Here’s a bunch of other great songs with music videos on YouTube that I found by them that are really worth listening to. You have to hear them to get a taste for what this band can do. Be careful not to play them all at once.
Song of the Day: Danko Jones – King Of Magazines
I never heard these guys before, they’re getting pretty popular I guess since they’ve got some big production and talent in their latest music videos, this animated music video is pretty unique, looks like Ren & Stimpy animators’ work. The song is energetic and releases a powerful rock sound that ebbs with the straight treble vocals. Good track I wanted to share.
Song of the Day: Dan Black – Symphonies
Dan Black rules. This was the song that made me listen to Kid Cudi because Cudi remixed it. I want to show the comparison of the two music videos here. Tell me which one is your favorite and why…
I’ve never seen two music videos so similar in which an artist was more or less surgically inserted into half of the video the same way his vocals are added into the song. Either way, I think Dan Black makes some most incredible music. His entire album “UN” is awesome! My other favorite song on the album is U+Me, but there are a lot of other gems in the track list. Anyway, here’s the other song where Kid Cudi was added. Which of these would you make the indie electronic song of the day?
Song of the Day: Alex Winston – Locomotive
Alex Winston’s a singer songwriter with plenty of high pitched fun pop rocks for your ears. I just found her on Pitchfork the other day and this song popped out to me right away. The lo-fi quality to the video doesn’t lend much credibility to the professionalism of her image but it does confirm the indie singer songwriter grassroots nature of her beginnings. I prefer not to watch the music video when listening to the song, maybe because all the editing and symbolic gestures in the video lead my imagination to a place where I get distracted from the music.
I recommend listening to her other two popular songs, Choice Notes and Sister Wife too. Her voice reminds me of the girl from the Cardigans while her songs could be in a Pippy longstockings soundtrack. Yet, despite the adolescent thoughts that her songs conjure up, there is a complexity and depth to them that demands respect. I missed writing a Song of the Day post yesterday. I’d love to get more suggestions. If you have any song suggestions for the Song of the Day blog, please email them to me, or post them in the comment section below, or Tweet them to my Twitter page or comment on the FB page.
UPDATE: YouTube took down the embedding of this song, but I recovered it on Vimeo. If you’re looking for songs like Locomotive by Alex Winston I recommend listening to her other two popular songs, Choice Notes and Sister Wife, but this blog has tons of music by other female vocalists and singer songwriters that you’ll love. So I just found the song Locomotive Alex Winston by google searching listen to Locomotive song by Alex Winston and clicking on all the links, but many of them were not playable. So I feel lucky that I found this playable version of the video that works. ENJOY!!!!
